▶ Play Flow PuzzleA 12×12 board has almost six times as many cells as a 5×5. You'd expect it to be roughly six times harder. It isn't — it's harder in a completely different way. Somewhere around the 9×9 mark, flow puzzles stop being a thing you feel and start being a thing you reason about. Understanding that shift is the difference between loving the late worlds and dreading them.
On a 5×5 or 6×6 — the bread and butter of the Mr. Bean and Charlie worlds — you can basically see the whole solution at once. There are only so many ways the lines can go, and your eye catches the right shape almost before your brain explains it. These boards reward speed and pattern recognition. Overthink them and you'll actually do worse.
That's by design. Early grids are small so your instincts can develop without getting punished. If you can three-star 5×5s quickly, your fundamentals are solid. (If you can't yet, the beginner's guide is the place to start.)
Now jump to a 12×12 in Sherlock or The Hero. Suddenly you can't hold the whole board in your head. The number of plausible routes explodes. The instinct that served you so well on small grids becomes a liability, because a confident wrong guess early on can poison forty cells before you notice.
On a small board, the danger is overthinking. On a big board, the danger is not thinking enough. Same game, opposite failure modes.
You can keep the entire 5×5 in working memory. Solve holistically, trust your eye, move fast.
You physically can't hold a 12×12 in your head, so stop trying. Break it into regions. Lock down the corners and edges first — those constrained dots are even more valuable on a big board because they're islands of certainty in a sea of options. Then solve outward in chunks, each decided region shrinking the chaos of what's left. The corner and edge techniques aren't optional on large grids; they're the only way in.
Find certainty, build from it. On a 12×12, never make a guess when a forced move is available somewhere on the board. There almost always is one — usually hiding in a corner or a boxed-in cell. Exhaust the certain moves before you gamble.
Bigger grids also carry more colors — a 5×5 might have three or four flows, a 12×12 can have nine or more. Each added color doesn't add difficulty linearly; it multiplies the ways paths can interfere with each other. This is why a big board rewards solving the most constrained color first so emphatically. With nine flows competing for space, the one with the fewest legal routes is dictating the whole solution whether you acknowledge it or not.
The worlds are ordered to ease you across this gap, not throw you off it. Grids grow gradually — 5×5 to 7×7 in the first worlds, 7×9 in the middle, 9×12 at the end — and by the time the big boards arrive you've had a lot of practice. If you're hitting a wall, it's usually right at one of these size jumps, and the fix isn't "try harder," it's "switch modes." Stop solving by feel and start solving by region. Here's the strange reward: once you can switch between instinct mode and reasoning mode at will, big boards become the most satisfying. A solved 5×5 is a pleasant little click. A solved 12×12 is something you actually built, region by region, decision by decision. The late worlds aren't a chore at the end of the game — they're the reason the small ones existed.
So next time a 12×12 makes you flinch, don't speed up. Slow down, find one certain move, and build a little island of order. Then another. That's how you eat an impossible board: one certainty at a time.
